As many of you already know, the Cleveland Browns signed free agent quarterback Josh McCown to a three-year deal on Friday night. The deal includes more than $6 million in guaranteed money and will likely signify the end of the Brian Hoyer era in Cleveland.

McCown is not a franchise savior, he is not going to get you to the Super Bowl, and isn’t likely going to win your team a ton of games with his talent. In all honesty, he isn’t as good as Brian Hoyer, but that might not be a bad thing right now.

The writing was clearly on the wall that Hoyer’s days were numbered in this organization. When the team benched him in favor of Johnny Manziel, especially given Manziel’s performance (or lack thereof), it said what the team really felt about him, he’s good, can win some games, but it is obvious he isn’t…

THE CLEVELAND SPORTS BULLETIN

Starting today and ending on the day of the actual NFL Draft on May 8 I will be posting a mock draft every Thursday.

Today’s Mock Draft Version 1.0 will be the quickest and most simple of the mocks as it will only be a picks 1-35 (to get in the Browns first three picks) type draft with no analysis or reasoning for the picks. In the following weeks I will add analysis and trades, as well as a nicer and more polished format.

The 2013 Cleveland Indians did what the 2011 and 2012 Indians could not. They won games down the stretch, didn’t fall when they needed to rise, and it earned them a spot in the 2013 MLB Postseason.

While it was a short stay, it was still a visit, and it has them hungry for more in 2014.

The biggest difference on the club last year, as opposed to the previous two was manager Terry Francona. Rather than allow his ship to sink, as skipper Manny Acta did, Francona led like a great captain and steadied his ship through the roughest waters and reached his destination with little doubt. Now, in 2014, after losing their closer, a key set up man, and two key members of their starting rotation in the offseason, it is once again on the capable shoulders of Francona to keep this squad afloat.

Why is it on…

Mentor quarterback Mitch Trubisky threw five first half touchdowns, including two each to Cameron Kavan and Conner Krizancic, as the number one seed Cardinals dominated the number eight seed visiting Cleveland JFK Eagles 48-16, in front of almost 4000 fans at Jerome T. Osborne Field.

The Cardinals wasted no time beginning their assault. After receiving the opening kickoff, Mentor marched 50 yards in 97 seconds, and capped off their drive when Trubisky found senior wide out Warren Ashton in the flat, and Ashton found his way, seven yards later, into the end zone for the game’s first score.

But that was only the beginning.

JFK took over on offense and promptly went three and out, thus sending the ball back to the air show that was the Mentor offense on this evening. Before you could blink, Trubisky found Kavan streaking down the field and into the end zone for a 35-yard touchdown that put the Cards up 14-0 with 9:22 remaining in the first quarter. Soon after another Eagles three and out, the Cardinals would punch in another score, this time Trubisky took it up the gut himself for a one-yard rushing TD, that gave his team a 21-0 lead only four and a half minutes into the contest against a shell-shocked JFK squad.

Fortunately for the Eagles, Mentor would not score again in the first quarter; unfortunately there were still three quarters to play.

After JFK seemed to gain momentum on their final drive of the first quarter, a drive which saw them get two of their three first half first downs, it stalled out to begin the second half, sending the ball and any momentum gained back to Trubisky and the Cardinals.

Mentor promptly took over the ball, and any hopes the Eagles had, as they headed straight towards the goal line, yet again, this time capping off the quick no-huddle drive with a 15-yard pass from Trubisky to Krizancic, making the score 28-0 early in the second quarter, and giving Trubisky his third touchdown pass of the game.

The Eagles offense took over after the Mentor touchdown and once again managed only four yards before having to punt. The JFK punter took the field and booted an 11-yard punt, under heavy pressure from Mentor rushers, and sent the ball back to the Cards at the Eagles 40 yard line.

Two plays later, a 22-yard pass to Kavan and an 18-yard strike to Krizancic for a TD, Mentor moved ahead 35-0 and moved one step closer to the next round of the playoffs.

After a touchback, JFK took over at their own twenty-yard line and produced their best drive of the first half. Quarterback Antonio Howard mixed in a couple QB scampers and a 10-yard pass play for a first down, before they were forced to punt the ball back to the Cardinals.

A 22-yard punt gave Mentor the ball back with 2:04 left in the half, or roughly about 2:03 longer than it takes the Cards to score.

On the first play of the drive Trubisky found Kavan down the sideline for a 41-yard completion that was highlighted by a magnificent leaping catch by Kavan, up and over the defender. One play later, the dynamic duo hooked up again, in the end zone, for a 13-yard score. The score was the final play for Mentor’s first team offense, and Trubisky.

Trubisky ended his night hitting on 14 of his 22 attempts for five touchdowns and 292 yards. As a team Mentor accumulated 311 yards of total offense in the first half, while JFK managed only 97.

With the game all but over, and Mentor resting their starters on both sides of the ball, the kids from JFK showed that they still had fight left in them. Howard found wide receiver Marcus Martin for two touchdowns, as well as two two-point conversions, to give the Eagles their only points of the night, and make the final score look more respectable.

The JFK Eagles end their excellent season with a 9-2 record, while the Cardinals move to 10-1 with the victory, and on to a neutral site battle with Solon, who blew out South 37-12 tonight.
